We spend a lot of time cleaning rugs, of which there are many, here is a brief history of hooked rugs.

It is not known for certain when and where the first hooked rugs were made, but the technique was developed in 1840′s in Quebec, Canada, and in New Hampshire also along the coast of Maine. The hooked rug popularity reached its peak in the 1850′s, when Asian jute, which was used to make inexpensive Hessian (in the US Burlap, Brin in Canada), was imported into the United States. The jute was used to make sacks, and when the sacks were opened out, they could be washed and stretched on a frame as backing fabric for rugs, the size of the sacks dictated the size of the rugs.

Designs on early rugs were drawn freehand. The motifs and scenes chosen were taken from everyday life – animals, especially horses, dogs, cats, houses and wildlife, including flowers. Rugs made in coastal areas reflected life there, designs included, ships, anchors, whales, shells and ropes. Hooked rugs came in many shapes, rectangles, ovals, squares, hexagons and octagons were all made, but one of the most popular shapes was the semi circle, which was appropriate for both the hearth and door. Semicircular door mats often carried a message such as ‘welcome’ or ‘call again’. Room sized floor coverings were rarely made, simply because they took so much time to create.

The earliest makers depended on vegetable dyes for their colours, Hemlock bark, peach leaves, golden rod, yellow hickory, walnut or spruce bark, onion skins, sumac, blueberry.

The modern day office increasingly relies on computer and online based distribution of documents to function efficiently. While it is not uncommon for companies to communicate solely via electronic means, there is still a demand for hard copies of documents for most businesses. These printers can take much more wear and tear than cheaper multifunction printers and through the utilisation of toner cartridges, the running costs can be greatly reduced. The typical monochrome office laser printer can produce approximately one thousand pages on one toner cartridge.

Something to bear in mind when choosing an office printer is the capacity of it’s paper feed tray. Too small a tray will result in continual trips to refill the tray – not exactly what is needed in a busy office as it wastes time and results in queues for printing. A busy office where the printer is in regular use through out day might need a printer whose tray holds at least 250 sheets. A useful alternative is to source a printer that has two trays that can take different sizes. One tray can carry standard A4 paper and the other tray can carry a different paper size such as legal letter paper or A3.

The amount of memory the printer has is also a consideration that needs to be taken into account. If your office needs to reproduce finely detailed images or documents of large size, the more memory the printer has, the easier it will be to print these documents in one run.

Connecting your printer to a network is essential for any office what has just one central printer but many computer terminals. Almost all modern printers have a networking function so that multiple computers can access and print from it. The step up from this is a printer that can connect to all the computers in an office via the Local Area Network (LAN) of the company. Thus the printer can be used by any computer in the office or building regardless of location.

In addition to the aforementioned aspects of modern printers, companies that need to reproduce colour or graphical documents would need to look at the colour printing and art reproductive qualities of a printer.

If an office needs a colour printer, a high quality colour laser printer should be considered. It may even be worth having a colour laser printer dedicated to colour work and then a cheaper monochrome printer for printing text documents or anything that does not need to be printed at as high a quality.

The other consideration is using a colour inkjet printer for photography printing. Even though inkjet printers are considered by most to be old fashioned, inkjet printers work much more effectively when used in conjunction with high-gloss photo paper.

OMR is an acronym for Optical Mark Recognition.

OMR forms are used for collecting data. Preparation of this type of form involves several critical steps.

Obviously, one needs to thoughtfully determine the kind of data that needs to be gathered and layout the questions in a clear, understandable format. These questions are then sent to the designer to figure out the best way to present these questions in an attractive layout. The designer needs to understand how the OMR scanner reads this information and position the questions and related response bubbles in just the right position on the form to assure that the scanner can accurately read the information. When the form design or layout is approved by the customer, the electronic form is moved to the printing phase. It is critical that the printer also understands the importance of consistent positioning of the printed sheet according to the layout.

The layout is based upon a grid system that is determined by the specific parameters of the scanner. The two basic elements of this grid are the timing marks and the response bubbles. The timing marks appear in one column on one edge of the sheet. These rectangular marks are viewed by the scanner as the sheet travels through it. A timing mark determines when to begin and end the viewing of the corresponding row of bubbles and record the results. A typical form can have up to 48 bubbles across the sheet. In order for the scanner to know what bubbles to look at, a file called a scanning definition needs to be created with the scanning software prior to the actual scanning process. This scanning definition tells the scanner which bubble or bubbles in the grid to look at to determine if they are filled in and then record the assigned value. These values or results are then added to an Excel type data file as each form is scanned. When the scanning is finished the results are then tabulated with the use of special reporting software. If the quality of the original scan form has been compromised by sloppy layout or printing processes, then the scanned data and the tabulated results potentially may not be reliable.

OMR is a great time-saving process in collecting data but can also create a huge headache if not done correctly. It’s important to do some homework and get a good handle on how OMR works before jumping into an OMR evaluation survey project. In 1850 Hessian with pre-stencilled patterns became available for the first time, a gentleman named Edward Frost, a peddler from Biddeford, Maine, grew interested in rugs whilst watching his wife at work, she was an experienced rug maker. He drew a pattern on some sacking and showed it to a neighbour, he was soon inundated with orders for more. Frost went on to make stencils from scrap tin so that he could stamp the patterns on Hessian, he sold his handiwork from door to door.

‘News of my invention of stamped rugs spread like magic…..I at once became Frost the rug man…I failed to find a man who dared invest a dollar in them: in fact, people did not know what they were for, and I had to go from house to house….for I found ladies who knew what patterns were for’.

In 1870 Frost began to print patterns in colour, and before ill health forced him to sell his business in 1876 he had made 750 zinc stencils capable of printing 180 designs. After his death, Frost’s stencils continued to be sold by mail order until 1900. They now belong to the Henry Ford museum at Greenfield Village, Dearborn, Michigan.

By the end of the nineteenth century, with the growth of industrialization and the increasing availability of inexpensive, ready made floor coverings of various types, the rag rug tradition had begun to die out. At the same time, however, the influence of the Arts and Crafts movement was beginning to be felt in England, as designers such as William Morris strove to counter the loss of craft skills arising from the industrialization and the poor quality of mass produced goods. The American Arts and Crafts movement was born out of similar dissatisfaction , the rag rug making continued, although in a more limited way, as part of the desire to sustain traditional crafts.

The Shakers, a sect founded in England in 1747 and taken the the United States around 1774 by Anne Lee, is known for the robust simplicity of its furniture and other artifacts. Their work has come to epitomize the manufacture of high quality products, designed so that the form perfectly serves the function of each piece. Living in isolated communities, the Shakers raised flax for textiles and sheep for wool and flannel.

As with every aspect of their lives, including the respect for property and details and care of interior furnishings, the design and manufacture of Shaker rugs and carpets were governed by the Millennial Laws of 1821, which were revised in 1845.

The Millennial Laws also stated that ‘the carpets in one room should be as alike as can consistently be provided, and these the deaconesses should provide’. Specific mention is made of the patterns that could be used for floor coverings.

Carpets are admissible, but they ought to be used with discretion and made plain. Mother Lucy says two colors are sufficient for one carpet. Make one strip of red and one of grey, another of butternut and grey.

It is thought that these rugs were probably the plain woven carpets made using rag or rag and wool combination in the weft.

They made most of the popular shapes, but with some characteristic features that identify their rugs as Shaker. The hooked rugs, for example, have rows of braiding bordering the  central hooked section, and the backs may be finished with narrow shaker woven tape. They also made ravel-knit rugs, which are characterized by a long, shaggy pile, with the texture of unraveled knitted goods.

Hard-wearing, practical floor coverings, such as braided, rag and fluff rugs, were made by Shaker communities and sold in their stores. Plush rugs were advertised in a catalog of Shaker goods dating from 1870. They sold at 70 cents a square foot and were available in blue, white, yellow, gold and maroon and in any size. Also supplied were pillows and footstools to match.

The first time you do a wedding will probably be a shock.

What seems simple at first can be a very stressful experience. The best thing you can do is ask to assist a photographer for nothing. You will gain loads of experience about posing, organising shots ect.

I would suggest that you photograph a wedding free of charge and just charge for print costs. By not charging, and the fact that you are NOT yet a business, and as long as you make this absolutely clear to the couple, you are limiting your liabilities but getting some incredible experience under your belt.

Wedding photography is so much more than just taking the photographs, you have to think about the albums, the organising, the printing and above all, your own proficiency, efficiency and professionalism.

Be prepared:

1. Meet the couple beforehand and talk to them about styles that they like (you might like to get some wedding photography books for them to flick through)
2. Check all of your camera equipment the night before. Pack plenty of batteries
3. Check out the venues before the day and look for places to pose the couple and work out what available light you have to play with.
4. Don’t set your ISO high for indoor shots and forget to change it when you go outside!
5. Don’t drink too much
6. Ask someone to help you
7. Ask the best man or maid of honour to help you organise group shots

Once you get it, weddings can be hard work but an awful lot of fun and very rewarding both financially and satisfactorily.

An important part of conference management is the conference evaluation. Most association conferences are repeated annually so it is critical for the planners to make an assessment of the quality of symposium sessions, speakers and overall experience. It will be less likely that association members and guests will attend future conferences if their previous experiences are mediocre at best. Only by getting relevant feedback from those in attendance will you ever know how well your conference was received and who you can count on to provide quality presentations for your future conferences.

A good conference planner will have a clear understanding of their goals and objectives and have an effective review process in choosing speakers and session topics. These instructor selections often come from personal encounters but most come from the recommendations of others. Speakers, session topics, venues and amenities don’t always provide the kind of quality desired and need to be weeded out. You can accomplish this by providing attendees with an easy conference evaluation tool that will assist you in making the necessary changes in environment, personnel and material that will assure a more successful conference in the future.

What kind of questions should you ask?

With a clear understanding of the goals and objectives of the conference in mind, prepare a comprehensive list of questions and associated measurable responses regarding individual speakers and sessions. Question responses will be either “Yes / No” or multiple level responses such “Excellent / Good / Fair / Poor” or “Strongly Agree / Agree / Neutral / Disagree / Strongly Disagree” to name a few. Search the internet for examples of conference evaluation questions. The measurable values usually would be higher the more positive they are as in Excellent being a value of 4 and Poor being a value of 1. The result would be calculated as a mean and provide you with a quick glance at the overall response to a given question. It is customary to provide an overall evaluation section in the survey to capture the general sense of the success of your conference which would include site location and amenities and the impact that the conference overall will have on an individual’s career or practice. Some open-ended questions or comment sections should also be provided to give the attendee opportunity to more freely express their personal insights and observations. All of this data will be extremely helpful to you in planning future conferences.

What is the most widely used evaluation instrument?

At the present time, paper OMR evaluation forms are the most widely used conference evaluation instrument. They are often combined with a web version of the survey for those more inclined to use their computers in the evaluation process. It is helpful in this situation to provide wireless ‘hot spots’ at the conference site for immediate participation while things are fresh in their minds. However, many attendees will prefer to respond online when they return to their home or office. The data from both of these sources can be combined and the tabulated results put into a readable report generally containing such things as response counts and tabulated percentages and mean values for easy review. The OMR and web survey process is best facilitated by a company with the tools and experience. They can also assist you in preparing your questions, and designing, printing and scanning your evaluations and preparing your reports.

As one responsible for conference management, you look forward to positive feedback from your attendees to assure you that things went according to your best laid plans. However, negative feedback is also very helpful in making sure you get the best resources for your next event and continue to grow into a healthy professional association. Every few months we are bombarded with divorce statistics and reports of how family life is changing. This probably sounds a bizarre topic for an interior design article, but the changing face of family life can throw up some real design challenges.

Let me outline a recent project I worked on for a family in Brighton and I’m sure it will either be relevant to you or you will know a family just like this.

My clients have two young children and live in a four-bedroom house. Both the parents also have children from a previous marriage, one of which (in their late teens) lives with the family and two of which regularly stay for weekends. Therefore, on some weekends, there are seven people in a four-bedroom house.

The challenge the family set me was to review the space available to them and to try and create a personal space for everyone. Not easy when two of the children only visit every other weekend, but critical that when they do, they feel at home and integrated into the family.

Here are some of the top tips I learned from that project which I’ve since passed onto other clients and hope they are of use to you too.

1. A tip which applies in every situation, but which is particularly important when space is really at a premium is de-clutter as much as possible. A good rule is for every new item you buy, remove an old one.

2. Rooms fulfil many purposes today, for example, lots of families who have a separate dining room, may also decide to use this room to house a communal computer and study area. Don’t allocate too many uses for any one room. In my view, a room can only have two purposes effectively, decide at the outset and stick to it.

3. If you have a wide hall way, or landing, consider placing the family computer and desk in this space. This can be a really effective use of space, particularly if your budget extends to buying some really smart shelving to keep clutter to a minimum. It also has the advantage of keeping computers out of children’s bedrooms, which is the preference of some parents.

4. Bunk beds are always a good solution if you have siblings sharing, but can also be really useful if you have step-children regularly visiting. Whilst sounding a small point, allowing children to choose their own bedding to match the overall colour design of the room can help to transform even that small area into personal space. Good quality bunk beds can be divided into separate single beds, so offering a versatility that may prove useful as children grow older and older ones leave for university.

5. Choose storage solutions carefully. If visiting step-children do not have their own room, it is really important that they have some space to store their belongings so that they do not constantly feel as though they are living out of a suitcase. On my project, I found the classic Cilek bookcase design invaluable as it is thin, but tall with a mix of cupboard and shelf based storage.

6. On my project, I could not believe the number of duvets and pillows my clients had, with summer and winter versions, storing them took up a surprising amount of space. I’m a real fan of the vacuum based storage bags that are now widely available. In my view you should only reduce duvets/pillows by 50% of their size if you want them to “bounce back”, but even this can make a real storage difference.

  [Finance:Personal-Finance] The process by which you release funds from your pension is often called pension unlocking as prior to this your pension funds were considered to be inaccessible and locked until retirement age. Government legislation has made it possible, now, to unlock funds from either occupational or personal pension schemes after the age of 50 (though this figure is set to rise to 55 in 2010).
• Off Plan Property Investment
